If you damage or lose your hearing aid
and need to make an insurance claim you should FIRST
contact Hearing Consultants before you call your insurer. We will advise you on how to achieve the best outcome for you.

Understand your rights when making an insurance claim for a hearing aid
- If you lose or damage your hearing aids, you may be directed by your insurer or one of their agents to a different clinic (their ‘preferred supplier’) to get your hearing aids replaced or repaired.
- Remember hearing aids are medical devices and therefore the Health and Disability Code of Consumer Rights protects your right to make informed choices and to express a preference as to who will provide your audiology services and have that preference met where practicable. So tell your insurance company, that you would prefer to attend Hearing Consultants.
- Your Insurance Company may offer you a hearing aid and other incentives supplied by a different clinic OR a cash settlement if you attend Hearing Consultants.
- Hearing Consultants will ensure your hearing aid will be replaced fully using your cash settlement and there will be no balance to pay and any other incentives will be matched. Remember; the cash settlement is based on the wording of your insurance policy and how it covers your hearing aid.
- If you are coerced or harassed by a different clinic which you have not chosen to attend then you may make a complaint to the Disability Commissioner https://www.hdc.org.nz/.
- If you are misled you may also make a complaint to the Commerce Commission under the Fair Trading Act https://comcom.govt.nz/make-a-complaint
- You should ask your insurance company now BEFORE your hearing aid is lost, what exactly your policy entitles you to. Ask them to explain in writing how they will handle claims and in particular whether they will require you to use a particular clinic.
