Hearing Testing in Wellington Clinic

What can a hearing test help detect?

A hearing test will show if you have deficiencies at certain frequencies or sounds.

The shape of the hearing test or where you are not hearing well, often relates to the cause of your hearing loss.

The hearing test result will indicate where in your auditory system you have problems and your audiologist will then be able to best advise you on a solution.

What happens when I get a hearing assessment?

To fully understand your hearing needs, a full diagnostic hearing assessment must be conducted. This consists of:

  • A full assessment of your hearing history, your hearing difficulties and hearing needs will be completed
  • Examination of your ear canals and ear drums for wax, infection and any abnormalities
  • A full hearing test of your hearing thresholds. We need to record the quietest levels you can hear at all frequencies
  • A speech discrimination test will then be performed. This test is to access your clarity of hearing conversation. This is the most common difficulty people experience
  • A tympanometry test, where a small amount of pressure is applied to your ear drums to check that they are moving freely
