What does a hearing aid do?

In the most basic terms a hearing aid consists of:

  • a microphone
  • an amplifier with microprocessor (powered by a small battery)
  • a speaker

The hearing aid ‘listens’ to sounds around it, amplifies them and feeds the amplified sound into your ear. Over years of technology improvements they have developed into very sophisticated computing devices with numerous features and functions to suit your needs and environments.

It is possible to tune your hearing aids to compensate for your particular hearing loss and make your hearing comfortable in all listening environments. Your hearing aid may connect to your TV or your cell phone directly.

What types of hearing aids are there?

There are two main types of hearing aids: Behind the ear and In the ear

Behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids come in two main varieties:

The main body sits behind the ear and contains the microphone(s), the amplifier/microprocessor and speaker with:
  • A thin tube that carries the audio down into your ear canal
  • Or the RITE (receiver in the ear) type has a pair of tiny wires that power a mini speaker (known as a receiver) that sits in your ear canal
The fitting that sits in the ear canal may consist of a dome or mini ear mould depending on your hearing loss and other factors.

These are the two most common types of hearing aids fitted on today’s market. There are also larger models of BTE hearing aids with a larger custom ear mould and a bigger battery for a more severe hearing loss.

In The Canal Hearing Aid

In the ear hearing aids come in a range of sizes and depth of fitting

  • In the ear (ITE)
  • In the canal (ITC)
  • Completely in the canal (CIC)
  • Invisible in the canal (IIC)

There are numerous other types for specialist needs. Contact the team at Hearing Consultants if you require additional information on the best In the Ear solution for your hearing needs.

How do I select the correct hearing aid?

Hearing aids come in many different styles and brands. Since Hearing Consultants are independent of preferred suppliers schemes and we are NOT owned by a hearing aid manufacture we have access to a full range of hearing aids on today’s market.

Your audiologist will perform full diagnostic hearing assessment which will include a hearing needs assessment. Once your audiologist has all the information they can advise you on the hearing aid that will best fulfil your needs.

Do I need one or two hearing aids?

Two ears give you better hearing in most cases and better directionality of sound, which is very important in group situations and when crossing the road. Hearing Consultants offer you a no-obligation trial of hearing aids so it is easy to assess the benefits of two vs one hearing aid.

Can I use my hearing aid on the phone?

Over the last few years there are more models of hearing aids that directly link to your Smartphone. This enables you to hear the caller directly in your hearing aids. This provides clear hearing with any phone call. If you do not use a Smart phone, many other solutions are available to make it easier for you to hear on the phone.

How much does a hearing aid cost?

Hearing aids range in price starting from $2000 each up to $5000 each for top of the range high tech solutions. Sometimes we have reduced prices depending on promotions or new models coming on the market. Just ask our friendly staff.

Why is there variation in price? What do I get for my money?

The more expensive hearing aids have more features, might be more powerful or might be extremely small. As a rule the more technologically advanced, the higher the cost. There are however some very good entry level hearing aids.

Hearing Aid Funding & Financial Assistance

All NZ citizens are entitled to a government subsidy of $500 per hearing aid every 6 years. The team at Hearing Consultants will apply for this funding on your behalf to the Ministry of Health.

If you have a history or noisy paid employment ACC might be a funding option for you. It is important to have a hearing test first so that your audiologist can advise if an ACC claim is an option.

If you have serviced in the Armed Forces you may be entitled to funding from Veterans Affairs. Contact the Welfare Officer at your local RSA for help or phone Veterans Affairs on 0800 483 8372 and ask for an application form.
